One man’s choice – an awful, selfish choice – destroyed his family and plunged his entire country into a civil war. He severed the bonds of brotherly love, shattered his nation’s trust in its leadership and forced men to fight in a bloody conflict with their neighbors. His hatred of an immigrant population was baseless. He hated them simply because of who they were. His prejudice caused them to suffer greatly.Even the faith community was challenged. How could the Holy One allow such things in their country? Did he care about what was happening in their land? Was he still worthy of their hope and praise? All our choices have consequences, but when they’re motivated by evil, personal gain at the expense of others and simple hatred, those consequences can be tragic.
