Once I had the opening scene written, I sat with a pen and notepad (that’s right, not a keyboard) and jotted down ideas as my imagination considered the scene. I asked myself questions: Why was Avri worried about Prince Devin? What is his friendship with King Castor like? Develop the characters, Avri, Mya and Caleb. Who are they?
I started writing again after I’d completed my notes. This got me to the end of chapter one. The section on the cave in En Jeppo was a late addition after I’d begun to develop plot lines. A very late addition, recommended by Debbie Barr, was the idea of a prophecy concerning Avri. It was fun to imagine and write that and, I believe, it makes the story richer.
